By cupping your hand and slapping the attacker directly on the ear, you can pressurize their eardrum which stuns them and knocks them off balance (balance is controlled by the inner-ear).
This works equally well no matter how big or strong the attacker is. Everyone’s ears are sensitive to pressure.
The important thing to remember is to keep your hand cupped, slap hard and fast, and aim so that you completely cup the ear.
This is a perfect move to do when you have to turn and face your attacker, because the turn adds power to the blow.
