Property is not worth it

March 15th, 2009 by webmaster

This seems like a no-brainer but it still needs to be said: a piece of property is not worth risking your life and fighting for.

The news tells heroic stories about fighting off purse snatchers. Some self defense books and videos have entire sections dedicated to fighting off purse snatchers. It’s just not worth it.

If someone is attacking you, fight back with everything you’ve got. If they are not attacking you however, and are simply taking something of yours, do not physically fight them over it. It is much much safer to avoid a physical fight altogether if it’s not necessary. It’s another way of escaping. You can even toss the money one way and run the other way.

If there is something in your purse or wallet that you are willing to fight to the death for, take it out right now. Problem solved.

Keep a record of your credit card numbers and the phone numbers you need to call to cancel them. Let it go.

This doesn’t just go for purses and wallets, it could also apply to carjackers or burglars. If they aren’t attacking you run away. Don’t get physical over property that can be replaced.

Purse safety

Keep it on one side, not across your body. Many purse snatchers are drive-by purse snatchers. Keeping the strap on one shoulder instead of cross-body lets it easily come away from your body. This is important because often times the victim will be caught in the strap and dragged by the vehicle, which can easily injure or kill.

Also keep the purse on whichever side is furthest from the road when you are on a sidewalk, to discourage drive-by snatchers.
