Scoop kick
March 15th, 2009 by webmasterLike a regular snap kick to the groin that most people are familiar with, this kick comes straight up between the legs. Instead of putting your foot straight back down though, you should point your toes up and yank your foot back towards you first.
This is a double-whammy. If the first kick doesn’t connect well you can still create a lot of pain when your foot comes out, scraping and yanking on the groin area. If the first kick does connect well the scoop at the end will seem even worse!
Also, this makes it a lot harder for the attacker to grab your leg.
Obviously this works better when your attacker is directly in front of you with his legs apart.
Men instinctively guard their groins, so this works best if you open with an attack to the eyes or face causing them to flinch and catching them off guard with the scoop kick. Contrary to popular belief, this works well on female attackers too and is much less expected.
It is important to note that while this move can end a confrontation, it may also seem to have no effect, or even a delayed effect. It is only one tool in your toolbox, not a total solution, so be ready with follow up moves if necessary.
Depending on the distance you can use the instep (where your laces are), ankle, or shin. Any closer and you would be better off using a knee to the groin.
