Be aware of your surroundings.

Park near a light, even if it’s not dark now it might be dark when you come out.

Never be afraid to ask someone from the store to walk you out or help you with your things.

Walk in the middle of the lanes instead of near the cars. Parked cars are excellent hiding spots for an attacker.

Get your keys or pepper spray out, and ready to go.

Do not park near big trucks, SUVs, or vans. Besides the fact that an attacker might be waiting in one to pull you in, he could also be using someone else’s truck, SUV or van as cover to not be seen.

Use a cart, rather than walking around with your arms completely full.

Beware of anyone offering to help you with your things. Like asking for directions or the time, this is a common ploy used by criminals to get in close and get you guard down.

Have your keys ready, and look around when you unlock your car, you should be able to do this by feel, the lock is in the same spot it’s always in. This moment of finding the right key, and focusing on the lock is often when criminals strike, because you are distracted.

Once inside your car, lock your doors, keep your windows up, and leave immediately.

If you have to load a baby into a car seat, first load your groceries, then get in the back seat with your baby, doors locked, and secure them in the seat. Then with your keys and/or mace ready, look around, get out, and then get into the front seat to drive away.

When an attacker grabs you by the arm a good way to release his grip is to twist your arm in the direction of his thumb. Don’t fight his 4 fingers when you can fight 1 thumb, in this way you are working against the weakest part of the grip.

In the heat of the moment you may forget which way to twist your arm out. That’s ok, just twist one way and if that doesn’t work twist the other!

One thing that makes it easier to twist out of his grip is to hit him with any of the other moves we teach just before you escape.

What you want to avoid however, is pulling directly away, that only tightens his grip.

A lot of you may have been told before, to hold your keys in your fist so that they stick out between your fingers, to punch an attacker in self defense. We do NOT recommend this. We consider it a self-defense myth. You are way more likely to hurt your hand than your attacker doing this.

Instead, use one key like a tiny knife.

Hold one of your keys like you would normally hold it to unlock a door. Hold it very tightly and use it just like you would use a tiny knife. You can stab or slash an attacker in self defense much more easily in this way.

To break an attackers grip you can even use the key to saw at his hand until he releases you. This works especially well if he has gabbed you around the waist from behind, which would put his hands well within your reach.

Whenever you are walking to your car, or anytime you feel their might be trouble, go ahead and get your keys out ahead of time. An attacker is not going to wait for you to find your keys! (The same can be said about your mace or pepper spray, HAVE IT OUT!)

Choose a sharp one

You will notice your car keys are usually the dullest keys you have, which is because they are used the most often. Grip the sharpest key you have when preparing to use keys in self defense.

You can even get a new key cut and not use it to unlock anything, which will keep it nice and sharp for self defense.

An attacker doesn’t want everyone to see what’s going on. They don’t want to gt caught. They don’t want attention.

Therefore you should make it a priority to attract as much attention as possible.

Always remember to Just Yell “Fire”

It may sound odd at first to yell “fire” when there is no fire, but there are many good reasons for it.

#1 People gawk

People feel safer coming out to gawk at a big spectacle like a fire. It’s quite a sight to see, and that’s what you want, witnesses. People however do not feel safe confronting a violent crazy person. Many will not come out to help if that’s what you scream.

#2 People care about their own safety

Fire rarely affects just one person. If they are within earshot of someone screaming “fire”, chances are it could spread to the building they are in. It is in their best interest to come out and see what’s going on. No one is going to roll over and go back to sleep if they think there is a chance that buildings around them are burning.

#3 Some people hate the police

In many places, especially the bad neighborhoods, people don’t like police. Screaming “police” won’t help you then. A lot of people don’t like having the police around. Everybody loves a fireman however. In bad neighborhoods such as these it is often pretty routine for fire departments to get all kinds of calls about crimes, which they forward to the police. Some people avoid calling the police but have no problem calling the ifre department.

Instincts are a wonderful thing, but sometimes people second guess themselves.

They think “Oh I’m just overreacting” or “I don’t want to seem rude”.

Always trust your danger instincts!

You have nothing to lose by being cautious. Who cares if you’re wrong? Who cares if it’s rude? No skin of your back.

Everyone is wrong sometimes, wouldn’t you rather be TOO safe instead of not safe enough?

Just the danger instincts!

There is a reason this article is not titles “Trust ALL your instincts”.

It’s called “Trust your DANGER instincts”.

Creeps don’t always have a sign on their forehead that says “creep”. Sometimes in fact they seem very friendly, or even charming. This is how they lure their targets closer. They are manipulative.

That’s not to say that every nice friendly guy is a psycho, just be cautious.

Always keep your eyes and ears open. This is very important when it comes to enforcing boundaries.

It’s important to identify the key points in your daily routines when you could be more alert.

Ipod safety

One example is when you are listening to an ipod, you are unable to hear an attacker coming up behind you, someone shouting a warning, gunshots, or even a car coming. If you simply leave one earbud in and take one out, you can listen to your music and still be aware of the sounds around you.

Cellphone safety

Talking or texting in public has it’s place, but stay aware of the environment around you. Don’t become completely absorbed in it, and know when it’s time to turn it off.

Reading in public

It’s nice to read a book at the park or bus stop, but be careful not to get so lost in it that you stop looking around. You should still keep an eye on the people around you even while reading

Shopping

Lots of people go shopping and then balance their checkbooks in the car afterwards, right there in the parking lot. Picture that. Alone in your car, looking down and focusing only at your checkbook, doing math in your head. Just do it when you get home instead.

Sleeping

Obviously sleeping in public is not safe, but people do it on the bus, in the park, in waiting rooms.

Other ways to stay alert

Everyone has their own unique daily routines. We can’t guess them all here, but you can build off these examples and identify your own problem areas. What are some of the areas where YOU could be more alert?

It’s gross, but to avoid an attacker, sometimes you have to think like an attacker.

The type of person they are looking for is meek and quiet.

The type of person they are looking for won’t put up much of a fight, if any.

The type of person they are looking for is easily intimidated.

That type of person appears to be an “easy target”.

You can appear to be the exact opposite, a “hard target”, simply by projecting confidence with your body language.

Walk tall, keep your head up, make eye contact, swing your arms with a confident stride.

It’s a numbers game to these people. They know if you look like a “hard target” they can just wait and someone else will come walking by. An “easy target” will come along. So why risk getting caught right?

It’s not pretty but it’s reality.
